Hevder iPhone 13 blir satellittelefon – skal være mulig å ringe og sende meldinger uten mobildekning

Dagens smarttelefoner krever mobildekning for å foreta anrop og sende tekstmeldinger. Men hvis analytikeren Ming-Chi Kuo har rett, vil iPhone snart få funksjonalitet som gjør det mulig å ringe og sende meldinger via satellitter. Det betyr at du i praksis kan holde kontakt med omverdenen uansett hvor du befinner deg.

Første i verden?

Kuo, som tidligere har kommet med iPhone-rykter som i ettertid har vist seg å være sanne, hevder i et notat for investorer at Apple vil introdusere denne funksjonaliteten allerede i iPhone 13, som trolig kommer i september. Vi understreker at denne informasjonen er høyst usikker, og det hører med til historien at Kuo også har tatt feil tidligere.

Men hvis det viser seg at Apple faktisk lanserer en satellitt-iPhone, vil det i så fall bli den første mainstream-mobilen i verden som tilbyr såkalt low-earth-orbit (LEO)-kommunikasjon. Kuo forventer også at funksjonaliteten i fremtiden vil bli tilgjengelig i Apples kommende AR-hodesett, diverse iOT-utstyr og i den ryktende Apple-bilen.

For å kunne tilby kommunikasjon via satellitter, skal Apple visstnok bruke en tilpasset utgave av Qualcomm X60-modemet.

Spennende hvis det stemmer, men spørsmålene melder seg

Dersom iPhone 13 får denne teknologien, er det spennende, og potensielt nyttig i enkelte situasjoner. Men kommer dette til å bli gratis, eller noe man må betale ekstra for? Og kan man sende meldinger via tredjeparts meldingstjenester, eller fungerer det kun med iMessage? Vil vi nordmenn få tilgang til funksjonaliteten samtidig som kundene i USA?

Hvis Kuo har rett med sin spådom, trenger vi ikke vente mange ukene før vi får svaret.
